In 2006, I moved with my girlfriend (now my wife) to a city I had never visited or been within 1000 miles of…Portland, Oregon. Why, you might (rightfully) ask? I couldn’t say. But Portland has a pull for a certain kind of person. And, when you get a million or so likeminded souls in a city, you become a majority. And interesting things happen.
This is the spirit of Portlandia. It really isn’t any more than that. There are simply a lot of people here who have similar ideas about the way life should be lived, and those ideas happen to be different from the vast majority of America. Tiny pockets of counter-culture that barely exist underground in other cities and towns thrive out in the open in Portlandia. And it is a beautiful thing.
