Crater Lake National Park

Crater Lake National Park is (surprisingly) Oregon’s only national park, and also one of the first national parks to be created. The magnificent blue lake fills the caldera of Mt. Mazama, a volcano that erupted 7700 years ago and collapsed into itself. It is an amazing sight and definitely something every Oregonian should see at least once in their life. Tons of trails allow you to explore the surrounding landscape, and a single trial leads down the steep cliffs to the lake itself, where you can take a boat tour or even do some swimming.

Located about 250 miles south of Portland, you probably want to make this an overnight trip instead of a day trip, as there is a lot to see. The historic Crater Lake Lodge sits on the rim of the caldera and has incredible views of the lake, while the Mazama campground and cabins sit a few miles south of the rim. There are also plenty of lodges and motels surrounding the park. The park is open year-round, though only a small portion of the park is open in winter due to the massive amounts of snow the park receives (over 50 feet per year).
