You’ve only been here for 5 6 years. What qualifies you to write about Portland?
Well, nothing special, really. But, I don’t think a native of Portland would have the same perspective as me, either. I’ve definitely noticed a trend in younger natives to not fully appreciate the situation they were born into. So, while others are probably better guides to the city, I hope to bring a different twist on things. After growing up in the mountains of Colorado and living in Austin, Las Vegas, Dallas and worse, I have an appreciation of what life is like outside of Portland and how lucky we are to live here. And, now that I’ve lived here for almost 5 6 years, I have some things to say about it (and even some grievances to air). Mostly, I just love this place and it has inspired me…for better or worse.
Does this site have anything to do with Portlandia, the TV show on IFC?
No. The first two posts on the site are the clues to how I got started and why I chose the name. The actual idea for the site came to me over a year ago (late 2009), but the idea for using “Portlandia” came from finding the voting maps and then finding Portlandia on Google Maps. When I searched for Portlandia, I found information about the upcoming TV sketch show, and that meant the nickname would probably stick.
