This seems like a fitting post to start this particular blog with, and while the question may seem obvious (especially to someone who does not live in the Portland area), it isn’t all that simple. Most residents of Portlandia would agree that the suburbs like Gresham, Beaverton and Hillsboro are hardly part of “our republic”, but few people outside of Oregon would probably even know the difference.
Luckily, a map of recent voting trends gives us a pretty good view of where the borders to Portlandia lie. As you would expect, the deep blue lies in downtown and the inner neighborhoods, gradually fading as you move to the outer neighborhoods of Portland proper and into the suburbs. I’d say this is about as accurate a map of Portlandia as you’ll find, so we’ll adopt it as our official guide to the boundaries of Portlandia until we can work up something artsy and clever…in true Portlandia spirit.
